Junk Removal & Cleanouts

Moving Out Cleanout: A 4-Week Plan to Move Day

A moving out cleanout plan: a 4-week timeline, what to sell, donate, or toss, dumpster vs. junk removal, and how to leave a rental clean.

Quick answer: A moving out cleanout goes smoothest on a four-week timeline. Spend the first two weeks sorting and selling, the third week donating and tossing, and the final week packing and cleaning. Rent a dumpster if you have help and want to work at your own pace, or book junk removal if you'd rather have a crew haul it in one trip.

Moving is stressful enough without hauling a garage full of stuff you don't even want to a new house. Whether you're relocating, downsizing to a condo, heading north for good after years as a snowbird, or moving out of a rental, the cleanout is where most of the work hides.

The good news: with a plan, it's manageable. Here's how to break it down so move day isn't a scramble.

4 weeks out: Plan and sort

Start by walking through every room, closet, and storage space, including the garage, attic, shed, and lanai. For each area, decide what's coming with you.

A simple system: Keep, Sell, Donate, Toss. Use colored tape or sticky notes so everyone in the house knows what's what.

If you're downsizing, measure the new place now. Knowing that your new living room only fits one couch makes decisions much easier.

This is also the week to take stock of how much will be tossed. That tells you whether you need a dumpster, a junk removal visit, or both.

3 weeks out: Sell and donate

Selling takes time, so start early.

  • Sell furniture, appliances, tools, and electronics that are in good shape. Online marketplaces and local buy-and-sell groups are popular in the Tampa Bay area.
  • Donate clothing, housewares, books, and furniture that won't sell. Many local charities and thrift stores accept donations; call ahead to check what they take and whether they pick up.
  • Give away what's left to friends, family, or neighbors.

Set a deadline. Anything that hasn't sold by the end of week three moves to the donate or toss pile.

2 weeks out: Toss and haul

Now it's time for the big clear-out. Book your dumpster or junk removal a little ahead so you get the dates you want.

Focus on the spaces that collect the most:

  • Garage: Old paint (keep it out of the dumpster), broken tools, boxes you haven't opened in years
  • Shed and yard: Rusted equipment, old patio furniture, leftover building materials
  • Attic and closets: Holiday decor you're done with, old luggage, outgrown items
  • Kids' rooms: Broken toys, outgrown furniture

Load the dumpster as you go, room by room. Our guide on how to load a dumpster will help you fit more in.

Move week: Pack and clean

By now, what's left in the house should be what's moving. Pack it, then do a final sweep for anything you missed. Schedule the dumpster pickup or the last junk removal visit for a day or two before you hand over the keys, so the driveway is clear and the house is empty for cleaning.

What to Sell, Donate, or Toss

Here's a quick guide for common items:

  • Furniture in good shape: Sell first, donate if it doesn't move.
  • Worn, stained, or broken furniture: Toss.
  • Mattresses: Old mattresses are hard to donate. Toss them, or use our mattress disposal service.
  • Working appliances: Sell or donate.
  • Old or broken appliances: Our appliance removal team can haul them.
  • Clothing and housewares: Donate what's in good condition.
  • Paint, chemicals, batteries, propane tanks, and tires: These can't go in a dumpster. Check with your county for household hazardous waste drop-off options.

When in doubt, ask yourself: would I buy this again today? If not, it probably doesn't need to come with you.

Dumpster vs. Junk Removal for Moving

Both get the junk out. The difference is who does the lifting and how fast.

Rent a dumpster if:

  • You have friends or family to help load
  • You want to work over several days instead of all at once
  • You're clearing a lot of stuff from a whole house

Most moving cleanouts fit in a 15-yard dumpster ($400, 3 tons included). A smaller apartment or a one-car garage may only need a 10-yard ($325). For a full house with years of accumulation, a 20-yard ($500) gives you room to spare.

Delivery, pickup, and disposal up to the weight limit are included in every flat rate.

Book junk removal if:

  • You don't have help or can't do heavy lifting
  • You want it gone in one visit
  • You only have a few bulky items, like a couch, a mattress, and a fridge

Our crew loads everything and hauls it away. Junk removal is priced per job, so send a description or a few photos and we'll give you a price.

Some people do both: a dumpster for the bulk of the cleanout, then a junk removal visit at the end for the last few heavy pieces.

Leaving a Rental Clean

If you're renting, how you leave the place can affect your security deposit. Read your lease for specific move-out requirements, and check with your landlord or property manager if anything is unclear.

General tips:

  • Remove everything that's yours. That includes junk in the garage, the shed, the side yard, and the lanai. Leaving furniture or piles behind is a common reason for charges.
  • Don't leave junk at the curb unless it fits your local trash and bulk pickup rules. Check with your city or county.
  • Clean as you empty. Once a room is cleared, wipe it down so you're not doing everything on the last day.
  • Take photos of each room after you're done, for your records.

Helping a Parent Downsize

A lot of moving cleanouts in Pasco County involve helping a parent move to a smaller home or assisted living. That often means sorting through decades of belongings, which is emotional as well as physical work.

Give yourself extra time, set aside family keepsakes early, and don't try to make every decision in one weekend. If the job is large, our guide to estate cleanouts has more tips, and our hoarding and estate cleanup team can help.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far ahead should I start a moving out cleanout?

About four weeks is a comfortable runway. That gives you time to sell or donate the good stuff, toss the rest, and still have a few days at the end to clean.

Should I rent a dumpster or hire junk removal when moving?

Rent a dumpster if you have help and want to clear things out over several days. A 15-yard ($400, 3 tons included) handles most moving cleanouts. Hire junk removal if you'd rather have a crew do the lifting in one visit. Junk removal is priced per job after you send a description or photos.

What should I do with furniture I'm not taking?

Sell anything in good shape first, then donate what doesn't sell. Broken, stained, or worn-out furniture goes in the dumpster or out with a junk removal crew.

How clean should I leave a rental when I move out?

Check your lease for move-out requirements. In general, remove everything that's yours, including junk in the garage, shed, and yard, and leave the place broom-clean or better.
