Dumpster for Kitchen Remodel: What Size Do You Need?

Picking a dumpster for a kitchen remodel? See which size fits cabinets, countertops, and flooring. Pasco County 15-yard dumpsters are $400 flat.

Quick answer: For most kitchen remodels, a 15-yard dumpster is the right fit. It holds about 4–5 pickup-truck loads with 3 tons included for $400. A small kitchen update can often fit in a 10-yard ($325), while a remodel that takes out walls or is part of a bigger renovation may need a 20-yard ($500).

Why the Right Dumpster for a Kitchen Remodel Matters

Kitchens are small rooms that make a surprising amount of debris. Upper and lower cabinets, a countertop, a backsplash, flooring, drywall, and sometimes the old appliances all come out at once.

Pick a dumpster that's too small and you'll be stacking debris in the garage while you wait for a swap. Pick one that's too big and you're paying for space you didn't need. And because countertops and tile are heavy, the weight limit matters as much as the size.

What Comes Out of a Kitchen Remodel

Here's what typically ends up in the dumpster, and what to know about each.

Cabinets

Cabinets take up the most space. They're mostly air inside, so break them down before you load them. Pull the doors and drawers off, and knock the boxes apart if you can. Flattened cabinets take up far less room than whole ones.

If your old cabinets are solid wood and in decent shape, think about donating them before demolition. Someone fixing up a garage or workshop might want them.

Countertops

Laminate countertops are light and easy. Granite, quartz, and other stone countertops are heavy. A stone countertop can add a lot of weight to your load in a small space.

Tips for stone countertops:

  • Break them into pieces you can safely carry. Wear gloves and eye protection.
  • Lay pieces flat across the floor of the dumpster instead of piling them in one corner.
  • Load them early so lighter debris goes on top.
  • Keep the weight limit in mind: 2 tons for a 10-yard, 3 tons for a 15-yard, 4 tons for a 20-yard.

Appliances

Ranges, dishwashers, and microwaves are mostly metal. Refrigerators, freezers, and anything else with refrigerant may need special handling before disposal, so ask first before tossing one in the dumpster.

If you're replacing appliances, check whether the store delivering your new ones will haul away the old ones. Otherwise, our appliance removal crew can take them separately.

Drywall

If you're opening up walls, moving plumbing, or updating electrical, you'll have drywall. It's bulky and gets heavy if it gets wet. In a Florida summer, afternoon storms are almost a daily thing, so cover your dumpster with a tarp when you're not loading it.

Flooring

Tile, vinyl plank, laminate, and old sheet vinyl all come up during a kitchen remodel. Ceramic and porcelain tile are heavy, especially with the mortar still attached. Vinyl and laminate are much lighter.

In older Pasco County homes, there may be layers of flooring stacked on top of each other. Plan for more debris than you expect.

Small kitchen update: 10-yard

You're keeping the layout and most of the cabinets, but swapping the countertop, backsplash, and sink. A 10-yard dumpster (12' L × 8' W × 3.5' H) holds about 3 pickup-truck loads. That's usually plenty.

Full kitchen remodel: 15-yard

Everything comes out down to the studs: cabinets, countertops, flooring, and some drywall. This is a typical full remodel, and the 15-yard (14' L × 8' W × 4' H) is built for it.

Kitchen plus more: 20-yard

You're knocking down a wall to open the kitchen to the living room, or redoing the kitchen as part of a larger renovation. The 20-yard (16' L × 8' W × 5' H) gives you room for 6–7 pickup-truck loads.

Stuck between two sizes? Size up. One larger dumpster usually costs less than two smaller hauls.

Tips for Loading a Kitchen Remodel Dumpster

  • Load heavy and flat first. Countertop pieces and tile go on the floor of the dumpster.
  • Break things down. Flatten cabinets and cut long pieces of trim and lumber.
  • Fill gaps. Slide smaller debris into the empty spaces between bigger pieces.
  • Keep it level. Don't pile debris above the walls of the dumpster.
  • Cover it. A tarp keeps rain from soaking drywall and adding weight.
  • Keep prohibited items out. Wet paint, solvents, and batteries can't go in. See our guide on what can't go in a dumpster.

Planning Around a Florida Kitchen Remodel

A few local things to think about:

  • Contractor schedules slip. Ask how long your rental runs and what happens if your contractor needs a few extra days.
  • HOA rules. Many communities in Trinity, Wesley Chapel, and Land O' Lakes have rules about driveway dumpsters. Check with your HOA before delivery.
  • Street placement. If the dumpster can't go in your driveway, check with your county or city about whether you need a permit.
  • Hurricane season. If a storm is in the forecast, call us to talk about an early pickup so loose debris isn't sitting in your yard.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size dumpster do I need for a kitchen remodel?

Most full kitchen remodels fit in a 15-yard dumpster ($400, 3 tons included). A small refresh, like new countertops or just cabinets, often fits in a 10-yard ($325). A kitchen that's part of a larger renovation, or one with walls coming down, may need a 20-yard ($500).

Can I put granite countertops in a dumpster?

Yes, but granite and quartz are very heavy for their size. Break them into manageable pieces, spread them across the floor of the dumpster, and keep the weight limit in mind: 2, 3, or 4 tons depending on size.

Can I throw an old refrigerator in a dumpster?

Ask first. Refrigerators, freezers, and other appliances with refrigerant may need special handling before disposal. Call or text us before loading one, or book appliance removal and we'll take it separately.

Can old drywall and flooring go in the same dumpster?

Yes. Drywall, lumber, flooring, cabinets, and fixtures can all go in together. Just keep out prohibited items like wet paint, solvents, and batteries.
