Dumpster for Flooring Removal: Size and Weight Guide

Picking a dumpster for flooring removal? Carpet is bulky, tile is heavy. Size and weight tips for Pasco County tear-outs, from $325.

Quick answer: For a dumpster for flooring removal, match the size to the material. Carpet, pad, and laminate are bulky but light, so a 15-yard handles most whole-house jobs. Ceramic tile, porcelain, and thinset are heavy, so the weight limit matters more than the space. For one or two rooms, a 10-yard is usually enough.

Flooring tear-outs fool a lot of people. A room of carpet looks like a mountain once it's rolled up, but it barely moves the scale. A small bathroom of tile looks like nothing in the trailer, but it can weigh more than everything else in the job combined. Here's how to plan for both.

Choosing a Dumpster for Flooring Removal: Space vs. Weight

Every Lupo dumpster has two limits: how much fits and how much weight is included.

SizeDimensionsWeight includedFlat priceGood fit for flooring
10-yard12' L × 8' W × 3.5' H2 tons included$325One or two rooms of carpet or laminate, or a small tile bathroom
15-yard14' L × 8' W × 4' H3 tons included$400Whole-house carpet or laminate, or a mid-size tile job
20-yard16' L × 8' W × 5' H4 tons included$500Large mixed tear-outs, or flooring plus a kitchen or bath remodel

Light flooring fills up the space before it gets close to the weight limit. Heavy flooring hits the weight limit long before the trailer looks full. Knowing which one you're dealing with is most of the battle.

Flooring Types, From Lightest to Heaviest

Carpet and Pad: Bulky but Light

Carpet is the classic "it looks like more than it is" material. A whole house of carpet and pad takes up a lot of room, but it's light compared to anything hard.

Tips for carpet:

  • Cut it into strips about 3 feet wide and roll them tight. Tape or tie each roll.
  • Roll the pad separately. It compresses well once it's rolled.
  • Pull tack strips and staples into a bucket and toss them in last.
  • Keep it dry. Wet carpet is a different animal. If you're tearing out carpet after a leak or storm flooding, expect it to weigh much more and plan for that.

Most whole-house carpet jobs fit comfortably in a 15-yard.

Laminate and Vinyl Plank: Medium Weight

Laminate and luxury vinyl plank stack flat and pack well. They're heavier than carpet but still manageable. The underlayment is light and bulky, a lot like carpet pad.

Stack planks flat instead of throwing them in loose. You'll fit a lot more in the trailer.

A note on older vinyl: Some older vinyl tile, sheet vinyl, and the black adhesive underneath can contain asbestos. If your home is older and you're not sure what's down there, have it tested before you start. Don't put suspected asbestos in a dumpster without talking to us first.

Hardwood: Heavier Than It Looks

Solid hardwood is dense, and pulling it up usually means nails, splinters, and sometimes subfloor. It doesn't pack as neatly as laminate because boards break into odd lengths.

For a few rooms, a 10-yard or 15-yard works. If you're also replacing subfloor, plan for the extra volume and weight.

Ceramic and Porcelain Tile: Very Heavy

This is where people run into trouble. Ceramic and porcelain tile are dense on their own. Add the thinset mortar that comes up stuck to the back, plus any backer board or mortar bed underneath, and the weight adds up fast.

A few hundred square feet of tile with thinset can weigh a ton or more. That's why weight matters more than volume here. A tile job might only fill a third of the trailer and still be close to the weight limit.

Tips for tile:

  • Tell us the square footage when you book. We'll help you pick a size with enough weight included.
  • Load it evenly. Spread heavy debris across the floor of the trailer instead of piling it at one end.
  • Don't fill it to the top with tile. If you're near the weight limit, stop and call us.
  • Mix in your light stuff. If the job also includes carpet, baseboards, or cardboard, those can fill the space above the tile.

Terrazzo: The Florida Wild Card

A lot of older Florida homes, including plenty of mid-century block houses around New Port Richey, Holiday, and Port Richey, have terrazzo under the carpet. Terrazzo is made of marble or stone chips set in cement, and it's extremely heavy.

Many homeowners who find terrazzo choose to have it polished instead of removed, since tearing it out is a serious demolition job. If you do decide to remove it, talk to us first. Terrazzo is similar to concrete for weight, so plan the trailer size around the weight limit, not the space.

Quick Sizing Guide for Flooring Tear-Outs

Use this as a starting point, then call if your job is on the edge:

  • One bedroom of carpet: 10-yard
  • Whole house of carpet or laminate: 15-yard
  • Small tile bathroom or laundry room: 10-yard, watching the weight
  • Kitchen and living area of tile: talk to us about weight; often a 15-yard or 20-yard
  • Flooring plus a kitchen or bath remodel: 20-yard
  • Terrazzo or a thick mortar bed: call first

If you're stuck between two sizes, size up. One trailer costs less than two. Our affordable dumpster rental guide has more on getting the most out of your rental.

Loading Tips for Flooring Debris

A few habits make a big difference:

  1. Heavy on the bottom, light on top. Tile and broken hardwood go first, spread evenly. Carpet rolls and underlayment go on top.
  2. Break down boxes. New flooring comes in a lot of cardboard. Flatten it.
  3. Keep the load level. Nothing should stick up above the sides of the trailer.
  4. Watch the weather. Summer afternoon storms in Pasco County can soak carpet and pad sitting in an open trailer. A tarp helps keep the weight down.
  5. Know what can't go in. Leftover adhesives, solvents, and wet paint are on the prohibited list. Let them dry or take them to a household hazardous waste drop-off.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size dumpster do I need for flooring removal?

For one or two rooms, a 10-yard ($325) is usually enough. For most whole-house carpet or laminate jobs, the 15-yard ($400) is the sweet spot. For large tile or mixed tear-outs, talk to us about weight before you pick a size.

Is tile too heavy for a dumpster?

Tile can go in, but it's heavy, especially with thinset still stuck to it. Weight limits matter more than space: the 10-yard includes 2 tons, the 15-yard 3 tons, and the 20-yard 4 tons. Tell us how many square feet you're pulling up and we'll help you pick.

Can I put carpet and pad in a dumpster?

Yes. Old carpet and pad are on our accepted list. Roll them tight and tape them so they take up less room. Keep them dry if you can, since wet carpet weighs a lot more.

What about old vinyl tile or black adhesive?

Some older vinyl tile and black mastic can contain asbestos. If your home is older and you're not sure, have it tested before tear-out, and call us before putting it in a dumpster.
